An Improved Method for Coupling Hydrodynamics with Astrophysical Reaction Networks

چکیده

Abstract Reacting astrophysical flows can be challenging to model, because of the difficulty in accurately coupling hydrodynamics and reactions. This particularly acute during explosive burning or at high temperatures where nuclear statistical equilibrium is established. We develop a new approach, based on ideas spectral deferred corrections (SDC) explicit stiff reaction sources as an alternative operator splitting, that simpler than more comprehensive SDC approach we demonstrated previously. apply method double-detonation problem with moderately sized network explore time step size tolerances, show simplified-SDC provides improved decreased computational expense compared traditional Strang splitting. all done framework Castro code, algorithm implementations are freely available.

Astrophysical Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics

In this review the basic principles of smooth particle hydrodynamics (SPH) are outlined in a pedagogical fashion. To start, a basic set of SPH equations that is used in many codes throughout the astrophysics community is derived explicitly. Much of SPH’s success relies on its excellent conservation properties and therefore the numerical conservation of physical invariants receives much attentio...

Improved predictions of nuclear reaction rates with the TALYS reaction code for astrophysical applications

Context. Nuclear reaction rates of astrophysical applications are traditionally determined on the basis of HauserFeshbach reaction codes. These codes adopt a number of approximations that have never been tested, such as a simplified width fluctuation correction, the neglect of delayed or multiple-particle emission during the electromagnetic decay cascade, or the absence of the pre-equilibrium c...

Hydrodynamics, magnetohydrodynamics, and astrophysical plasmas

1 Introduction It is not uncommon to encounter the assertion that the dynamical evolution of the large-scale bulk velocity v of a collisionless gas is not described by the hydrodynamic (HD) equations. A favorite " reason " is the statement that pressure cannot be defined in the absence of collisions. Then in some quarters it is believed that the large-scale bulk dynamics of a swirling magnetize...

Exploding and Non-exploding Stars: Coupling Nuclear Reaction Networks to Multidimensional Hydrodynamics

After decades of one-dimensional nucleosynthesis calculations, the growth of computational resources has meanwhile reached a level, which for the first time allows astrophysicists to consider performing routinely realistic multidimensional nucleosynthesis calculations in explosive and, to some extent, also in non-explosive environments. In the present contribution we attempt to give a short ove...
